The Nikonos RS, introduced in 1992, was the first fully waterproof autofocus SLR camera, designed specifically for underwater photography. Built to function at depths of up to 100 meters (328 feet) without an external housing, it combined a robust, watertight body with a selection of specialized underwater lenses, including a 13mm fisheye, 28mm wide, 50mm macro, and the world’s first underwater zoom lens, a 20–35mm. Based on the Nikon F-601AF, the RS offered professional photographers unprecedented control and image quality underwater. Although production ended in 1996 due to high costs and the rise of digital cameras with housings, the Nikonos RS remains a milestone in the evolution of underwater photography.
